General Information about Our Litters

Dated:  March 2007

Prices:  Specific Prices are quoted in our "Upcoming Litters." Generally, the price for each puppy is $1,600US, but variations in price may occur depending on combinations including, but not limited to, stud fees, travel fees, litter size, number of males vs. females, and Non-Breeding Registrations (if offered).  Certain limited discounts are available as well to verified working homes (ie, SAR and/or LEO).

DEPOSITS: Deposits are requested in the amount of $200US.  These are non-refundable (at the Breeder's option) but the deposit is transferrable.  Upon receipt of a deposit, Morgensolen will send you a "Morgensolen Kennel Contract and Health Guarantee."

DELIVERY: Pups must be fully paid for prior to leaving (8 weeks of age), unless other arrangements have been made in writing.  Each puppy will leave with a Health Certificate from a qualified veterinarian.  Initial vaccinations are given.

SHIPPING: Morgensolen will supply at new owner's cost a "200" VariKennel-style crate for transporting the pup.  The cost of the crate is approximately $100.00US (including taxes).  Air fares range from $100US-$300US (most North American destinations).  Airfare must be prepaid prior to the pup leaving.  Please note that while many puppies have been sent to various places all over the world without encountering any problems, there is always a risk of injury or death when flying a puppy.  Therefore, Morgensolen prefers that new owners arrange direct pick-up of their new puppy, and Morgensolen will work with all new owners to ensure that the new puppy arrives safely to its new home.  Please note that air transportation may also be limited due to temperature restrictions and/or customs hours.

RANKING OF DEPOSITS:  Deposits are ranked by date received but "suitability of the pup for a particular home" is always the foremost consideration.  Morgensolen does NOT advertise the concept of "first pick" because this can be VERY misleading. There is no such thing as "first pick" that applies equally to all buyers - ranging from schutzhund to ring homes and/or obedience/pet to protection/police homes, not to mention conformation criteria.  An experienced Breeder: 1.  Knows their lines/pups.  2.  Sees the pups daily AND has the best insight to interpret early behaviors in terms of later aptitude for sport, etc...     3.  Will do their best to apply this knowledge/experience so each PUP gets the very BEST (most suitable) HOME and  PUPPY BUYERS get the BEST (most suitable) PUP!!

TESTING: MorgenSolen litter mates exhibit strong consistency in character (variations are more common between litters, depending on the combination) but pups are tested at every opportunity.  These tests are ongoing and can vary with the opportunity to subject pups to novel situations.   Standard temperament tests are included and tests become more reliable as the pups mature. All test results are communicated to puppy buyers.  Their input is encouraged and often they help make the decision as to which pup is most suitable for their purposes.

GENERALLY REARING CONSIDERATIONS:  Pups are raised in my home.  They are handled (and color coded)  from the time they are born.  The most aggressive feeders are noted.  From 2 weeks on, mild stress is applied and reactions noted. (These mild stressors are from a program called "Bio Sensor," which was later known as the "Super Dog" Program and which was found to develop dogs that are superior when put in learning or competitive situations).  From 3 weeks on, pack behavior is noted. General notes include: which pups are the noisiest, which squirm and/or cry or settle down and enjoy being handled, which win or lose in competition with litter mates, etc...  Responses to noise and change of environment, footing, etc...   From 4 weeks on, socialization begins and more individual attention is given each pup (away from litter mates) as well as introducing pups to new places and people..  From 6 weeks on, tests focus more on specifics, for example:
        Dominance: (response to challenges, restraint, elevation, etc...);
        Social attraction/trainability: (attraction to humans, following, willingness to retrieve, independence & adventurous attitude, ability to solve problems, etc...);
        Confidence: (strange places/situations, reaction to strange looking people, independence & adventurous attitude,  investigating/attacking strange toys, noises, heights, tenacity in solving & overcoming barriers to various goals, etc..) ;
        Drive levels: food, prey (chasing balls and/or rags, etc...and later, biting prey held by helpers;  tenacity to find/win food)
Prior to leaving, pups are prey biting and engaging in tug of war, often with plastic bottle of rocks shook over their heads.

Drive levels, nerve fiber, tenacity, confidence, hardness and many other factors (including reaction to gunfire) are noted.   Very near to 8 weeks conformation is evaluated.

Conformation:
Morgensolen's "Committment to Excellence" is to improve the working ability of the German Shepherd Dog. Thus, while Morgensolen's Breeding Program selections are made PRIMARILY for working ability and for health, good conformation is not ignored as structural integrity is a "must" for any working dog!  However, excellent/"show winning"conformation PLUS exceptional, natural working ability rarely (if ever) comes in one neat package and breeders must chose breeding animals, and compromise, according to their goals/primary selection criteria. So, if the goal is to win in the competitive show arena  (primary selection being conformation) and this selection proves successful in the show ring, it follows that a second (or last) ranking for working ability (in that same selection) will adversely effect working ability (especially over many generations).  Accordingly, Morgensolen will always select primarily for working ability and, if puppy buyers want a "show prospect," then their best odds are in a puppy/combination from a reputable breeder who selects PRIMARILY for that.  If, on the other hand, you want a "working prospect," the odds are in favor of the puppy/combination from a reputable breeder who selects PRIMARILY for that.  (Those odds are further increased by line breeding/inbreeding on those qualities.)  Simple LAW OF PROBABILITY and not a claim that "show breeders" never produce excellent working dogs.  Nor is it a claim that "working breeders" never produce excellence in the show ring.  Many years experience, observing many "working" and "show" ("show" usually called "Total DSD")  litters enter schutzhund training, proved to me the differences in working ability (especially in young pups whose natural ability is not yet enhanced or diminished by training) and that the above Law of Probability is not a myth!

MorgenSolen Health Guarantee:
MorgenSolen stands behind every pup and offers MorgenSolen puppy buyers a full refund or replacement pup (at breeder's option) for specific genetic health problems.  But, we believe the best "guarantee" is the one you never have to use!  MorgenSolen pups arrive with a medical certificate from licensed veterinarian.  They are guaranteed to be:

         * Free of genetic disabling diseases.
         * Hips are guaranteed to pass OFA or OVC.
           (Exrays to be taken/submitted prior to the
            dog's 30 month birthday)

Longevity:
No line can claim to be free of health diseases but MorgenSolen strives to breed to lines that enjoy a superior reputation in this regard. Certainly longevity is the "best proof" of health for the puppy buyer!  With regard to  "claims" regarding longevity, GSDs from all different lines seem, in general, to be prone to many ailments by the time they are 9 or 10 years old and many  do not live far past that age.  As Morgensolen's "Committment to Excellence," MorgenSolen will post all available information it has on the life span of those German Shepherds we have has used in our breeding program as well as all available information on the puppies we have bred.

Note regarding Longevity:  Stress is one factor to consider in longevity but food, exercise and general care MUST be considered.
